Founded in 1960, the University of the Western Cape is one of South Africa’s most respected public universities. Located in Bellville, Cape Town, UWC has built a powerful reputation for academic excellence, social justice, and producing graduates who make a real difference — across South Africa and internationally.
UWC is a full-time, contact university — most programmes are taught on campus in Bellville, not through distance learning. It offers more than 200 degree, diploma, and certificate programmes across seven faculties:
- Faculty of Arts and Humanities
- Faculty of Community and Health Sciences
- Faculty of Dentistry
- Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences
- Faculty of Education
- Faculty of Law
- Faculty of Natural Sciences
UWC 2027 Application Key Dates
These are the official dates confirmed by UWC for the 2027 academic year. Missing any of these deadlines is not recoverable — late applications are generally not accepted.
| Event | Date | Notes |
| Applications open | 1 April 2026 | Portal is live |
| General closing date | 30 September 2026 | All faculties |
| Dentistry & Oral Health | 31 August 2026 | Earlier deadline |
| Final selection (Gr 12) | January 2027 | After NSC results |
Important: If you have changed your mind about a programme after applying, do not submit a new application. Contact the UWC Contact Centre at 021 959 3900/01 to make changes. A second application causes delays and complications.
Who Should Apply for UWC 2027?
Current Grade 12 learners (2026 Matric class)
If you are completing Matric in 2026, you can — and should — apply right now. You do not need to wait for your final NSC results. UWC accepts applications using your final Grade 11 results or June 2026 exam results. No supporting documents need to be uploaded at this stage. Your final marks will be used for the selection decision in January 2027.
Post-matric applicants
If you completed Matric in a previous year and already have your NSC results, you are a post-matric applicant. You will need to upload your certified Matric certificate and relevant academic records after submitting your online application.
Transfer students (from another institution)
If you are currently studying at another university or TVET college and wish to transfer to UWC, submit a certified copy of your academic record and a certificate of good conduct stamped by your current institution’s registrar.
Postgraduate applicants
Students who already hold an undergraduate degree and wish to study further at UWC must also apply by 30 September 2026. Postgraduate applicants may apply for a maximum of two programme choices.
International applicants
If you completed your schooling outside South Africa, you must first apply for exemption through Universities South Africa (USAf) before applying to UWC. Postgraduate applicants with foreign qualifications need a SAQA evaluation certificate. Contact isso@uwc.ac.za for guidance.
UWC Minimum Admission Requirements 2027
Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission — all UWC programmes are competitive and merit-based. However, you must meet the minimum to be considered.
Bachelor’s degree programmes
A minimum of a National Senior Certificate (NSC), certified by Umalusi, with an achievement rating of Level 4 (50-59% = Adequate Achievement) or better in four subjects from the designated subject list. Relevant designated subjects include Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Accounting, Economics, Business Studies, Geography, History, and more.
Note: High-demand programmes like BCom, BSc, LLB, and BDS (Bachelor of Dentistry) require subject-specific marks well above the minimum. Always check your specific faculty’s requirements on the UWC faculties page before applying.
Diploma programmes
A minimum NSC with an achievement rating of Level 3 (40-49% = Moderate Achievement) in four recognised 20-credit NSC subjects.
Higher certificate programmes
A National Senior Certificate as certified by Umalusi is the minimum requirement.
How to Complete Your UWC Online Application 2027 — Step by Step
1. Go to the official UWC application portal at student.uwc.ac.za
>> Visit student.uwc.ac.za. Do not use third-party websites to submit your application — only the official portal is valid.
2. Create a profile with a valid email address
>> If you are new applicants click on the first button to create a profile. Use a valid email address. This email will be your primary channel for all UWC communication, including your acknowledgement letter, applicant number, and offer. Check it daily.
3. Select up to two programme choices
>> You may choose a maximum of two programmes. For highly competitive programmes like Dentistry, note it counts as one of your two choices. Choose strategically — pair a competitive option with a realistic second choice.
4. Complete all personal and academic details
>> Accuracy is critical. Any errors may require you to contact UWC and could delay processing. If your contact details change after applying, notify UWC immediately
5. Submit the form and click ‘Accept’
>> There is no application fee. After submission, you will receive an acknowledgement letter via email containing your applicant number. Keep this number for all future communication.
6. Upload supporting documents (if applicable)
>> Grade 12 learners upload nothing at this stage. Post-matric, transfer, and postgraduate applicants must upload documents at studentdocumentupload.uwc.ac.za. All copies must be certified, clear, and complete.
7. Monitor your email and wait for the outcome
>> Grade 12 final selection happens in January 2027. Other applicants may receive offers earlier. When you receive a firm offer, you must accept it within the designated timeframe or it will expire.
Documents Required for UWC 2027 Applications
What you need to upload depends on your applicant type:
- Current Grade 12 learners: No documents needed at the initial application stage.
- Already Matriculated: Certified copy of your Matric certificate or foreign school leaving certificate.
- Transfer students: Certified academic record and certificate of good conduct stamped by your institution’s registrar.
- Gap year applicants: An affidavit briefly describing your activities since completing Matric.
- International applicants: USAf Exemption Certificate and/or SAQA evaluation certificate, as applicable.
All certified documents must be clear and legible. Blurry or incomplete uploads will prevent your application from being considered complete.

Financial Aid: NSFAS, Merit Awards, and Bursaries
UWC is committed to making education accessible. If you are concerned about fees, here are your main options:
NSFAS bursary
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) covers tuition, accommodation, meals, and allowances for qualifying students from households with a combined annual income of R350,000 or less (R600,000 for students with disabilities). You apply directly through NSFAS — not through UWC. Visit the NSFAS website to apply as soon as you receive your firm offer from UWC.

UWC merit awards
UWC offers merit awards to Grade 12 learners who achieve an A or B aggregate in their NSC. An A aggregate covers 100% of tuition for the year, while a B aggregate covers 75% of tuition. Applications for merit awards are only submitted after you have received and accepted your offer from UWC.
Residence
About a quarter of UWC students live in university residences. Residence applications are handled separately from academic applications. Contact Residential Services at resservices1@uwc.ac.za or call +27 21 959 2569 for details.

Tips for a Successful UWC 2027 Application
- Apply early. The portal is open now. Early applications give you more time to fix errors, and faculties review applications on a rolling basis. Do not wait until September.
- Choose your two programmes strategically. If your first choice is highly competitive, pair it with a realistic second option.
- Keep your email active and accessible. All correspondence — acknowledgements, document requests, and firm offers — comes via email. A full inbox or wrong address can cost you your place.
- Do not submit more than one application. To change a programme choice or contact details, call 021 959 3900/01 or email admissions@uwc.ac.za.
- Check document quality before uploading. Certified copies must be stamped by a commissioner of oaths. Blurry or cropped documents are rejected.
- Accept your offer on time. When a firm offer arrives, accept it within the designated timeframe. If you miss it, contact UWC immediately — it may still be reinstated.
