What Is an APS Score?
APS stands for Admission Point Score. It is a number calculated from your NSC (matric) results that South African universities use to decide whether you qualify for admission into a specific programme. Each subject is converted to a point value, and those points are added together.
Note: Your APS score is NOT the same across all universities. Some universities use a standard 7-point scale; others use their own method. Always calculate your APS using the specific university’s calculator.
How Is the APS Calculated? (Standard Scale)
Most universities use the following conversion table for your NSC subject marks:
| Mark Range (%) | Symbol | APS Points Awarded |
| 80 – 100 | 7 (Outstanding) | 7 |
| 70 – 79 | 6 (Meritorious) | 6 |
| 60 – 69 | 5 (Substantial) | 5 |
| 50 – 59 | 4 (Adequate) | 4 |
| 40 – 49 | 3 (Moderate) | 3 |
| 30 – 39 | 2 (Elementary) | 2 |
| 0 – 29 | 1 (Not Achieved) | 1 |
Important notes about APS calculation:
- Life Orientation is excluded from most universities’ APS calculations.
- Universities count your best 6 subjects (excluding LO) unless a specific subject is required.
- Stellenbosch University uses a different scoring system — always use their specific calculator.
- Wits University uses a weighted APS that accounts for subject difficulty.
- Some programmes (e.g. Medicine, Engineering) have minimum subject requirements in addition to APS.

What to Do After Calculating Your APS
- Compare your APS to the minimum requirement listed on the university’s prospectus for your chosen programme.
- Check specific subject requirements — a high APS is not enough if you are missing a required subject (e.g. Maths for Engineering).
- Apply online through the university’s official website before the closing date — most close in September/October.
- Apply for NSFAS if you qualify for financial aid. The NSFAS closing date is usually in October.
- Apply to multiple universities using the same documents (certified ID, matric statement, proof of address).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the minimum APS score for university admission in South Africa?
The minimum APS varies by institution. Universities of Technology typically accept APS from 18–20, while traditional universities require APS 22–30+. Research-intensive universities like UCT, Wits, UP, and SU require 30–45+ depending on the programme.
Does Life Orientation count towards my APS?
No. Life Orientation (LO) is not counted in the APS calculation at most South African universities. Your APS is based on your best 6 subjects excluding LO.
Can I calculate my APS before getting my matric results?
Yes. You can use your trial exam marks or predicted marks as an estimate. However, your final admission depends on your official NSC results.
What if my APS is lower than the minimum requirement?
You may qualify for an extended curriculum programme (ECP) or a foundation year offered by many universities. These programmes allow students who do not meet the standard APS to still enter the degree over an additional year.
Is an APS of 30 good in South Africa?
An APS of 30 qualifies you for most programmes at comprehensive and traditional universities. For highly competitive programmes like Medicine, Law, or Engineering at UCT/Wits/UP, you will typically need APS 35–45.
How many subjects are included in APS calculation?
Most universities use 6 subjects (your best 6 from the NSC, excluding Life Orientation). Some universities may also specify compulsory subjects that must be included regardless of marks.
